Ridley Scott’s epic sci-fi comedy adventure stars Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain as con-artist crew members on a mission to the outer limits of the solar system, hoping to survive a violent storm and contact with an alien race.
In addition to bringing our heroes face-to-face with an alien civilization, the film’s official synopsis provides us with the latest update on the plot:
“The journey continues…Their target: the planet of Themyscira, where, according to Greek mythology, the original Earth-born humans were sheltered from invaders. But, what could possibly bring four people to a place like this? A mystery awaits.”
The Martian is a heart-wrenching account of NASA astronaut Mark Watney’s exploits on the planet Mars in the first book by Andy Weir. Set on the eve of the “summer” or winter solstice, it tells the story of how Watney remains alive and functioning even though he is confined in a life-support pod, his only hope of returning home being the re-supply ship that he sends and receives via satellite.
At the same time, he begins to unravel the plot, and build a complete computer simulation of the Martian landscape which he sends back to earth. His communications with the outside world have been limited to a simple text message on a small screen and a line of video, which gives us a taste of the story’s crazy plot, often highlighting the characters’ motivations and the conflict between human civilization and the alien space travelers.
